About me

Hello and welcome to my blog. I designed this page to tell you a bit about me and why I decided to start blogging.

When someone says, “Tell me about yourself” my first reaction is usually a blank stare. Not because I don’t have anything to say, but because my first thought is always, “Where do I begin and what would this particular person be interested in hearing about?”

This dilemma explains why I started my blog in May but am only getting around to writing the “about me” page in September. (sigh)

In the Beginning

I always start by saying, “I grew up in Oklahoma”. Here I am at 41 years old (and have not lived there for 20 years) and that is still the first way I identify myself. Oklahoma is in my blood, it is in my accent, and I am proud of my native heritage.

At 25 years of age, I decided to join the United States Army. I stayed with the military for 13 years before moving on to a different phase in life. I loved all the people I met, all the places I visited/lived, and all the great experiences that being part of the Army provided.

During my time in the Army, I obtained a B.A. in History. I then received my teaching license in Secondary Education Social Studies. I adore history and cannot wait to teach it! (More on that later.)

Life Changes

At the age of 35, I met my husband. Marrying him required that I move (yet again) and I had the pleasure of acquiring an insta-family. My husband had two daughters who were in their twenties. At that time, the oldest had one child and one on the way.

At 39, I found out that I was pregnant. A son was added to our unique family dynamic. Inquisitive strangers give me “the look” when I explain that the four-year-old is my granddaughter and the two-year-old is my son. My granddaughter finally said, “Let’s just nod and smile, Mema” which is our new mantra. 🙂

Because my granddaughter and son both needed a caregiver, it made the most sense for me to become a stay-at-home mom. Hence, immediately after obtaining my license to teach, I chose to put that career on hold.

Why I Blog

I love to write! I also love to research, read, and teach others about what I have learned. When I began to look into ideas of how to make money from home, blogging seemed to fit the ideas and passions that I have.

Many people wonder why I chose the blog name that I did. I decided to chose “Not My Mom’s World” because the life I have chosen to live is vastly different than my mom’s. It is not better or worse, just different. I wanted a title that reflected that. After talking it over with my mom (with whom I am very close), we both agreed that it symbolized what I wanted to write about.

So what is it that I want to write about? My life. I want to talk about having a blended family, about my hobbies (cooking, gardening), and about running a household as a stay-at-home mom (saving money, raising kids).
